According to AFP, the stampede happened in a small alleyway close to the Hamilton Hotel in Itaewon; the reason is still under investigation. Choi Sung-beam, chief of the Yongsan Fire Station, gave a briefing at the scene and stated that at least 65 individuals were hurt in the brawl.

According to the officials, the death toll could go up. Nineteen injured were in bad condition and required emergency care.

Due to a large number of victims, emergency personnel requested that onlookers provide first aid and CPR to victims on the streets, according to AFP.

According to the Yonhap news agency, President Yoon Suk-yeol proclaimed a time of national mourning on Sunday in response to the stampede.

The Associated Press reported him as stating that although the remains of the remaining 46 victims who had been left on the streets were being moved to a local gym so that staff members could identify them, seventy-four of the deceased had been sent to hospitals.

Officials had earlier reported that 50 people were experiencing cardiac arrest, and more than 140 ambulances had been sent to the area to assist the sufferers. According to sources, the incident occurred due to a crush brought on by the size of the crowd.

People were seen being lifted by paramedics in a popular video of the incident while they were lying on the crowded streets. In the South Korean capital, Itaewon is a well-liked Halloween attraction.

According to reports, emergency personnel got at least 81 calls about the Halloween event. According to the presidential office, President Yoon Suk-yeol directed officials to send first aid teams and quickly reserve hospital beds for injured individuals.
